The enthusiasms of Aileen Hall ranged over a wide field and included classic jazz. She befriended many musicians, including the American trombonist Benny Morton. My wife and I spent many memorable evenings with Benny and Aileen at Ronnie Scott’s and the 100 Club, where Benny played. We also had the pleasure of accompanying her to some of the restaurants she assessed for the Good Food Guide. At times one felt apprehensive for the restaurateur, as Aileen ordered the items she thought them most likely to find difficult.
